Chicago was facing the Carolina Panthers Sunday in a must win game to keep pace with the Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions. The Panthers gave the Bears all they had, but came up short falling 34 to 29, in Chicago.
After trading field goals in the first quarter, Bears defensive back D.J. Moore picked Cam Newton off and returned it for a touchdown, giving the Bears a 10-3 lead.
On the ensuing drive Newton was able to hit Steve Smith on a 53 yard pass, setting up a touchdown run by Newton to tie the game at 10. The Chicago defense did not play as well as would be expected against a rookie quarterback, making few plays late, but all in all looking very poor.
On the very next drive, Matt Forte got into the end zone on a 17 yard run. Forte went on to have a great game rushing for 205 yards on 25 carries, and added 43 yards receiving.
The Bears defense was able to stop the Panthers on the next drive, and Carolina made the silly mistake of actually punting to Devin Hester who made them look foolish on a 69 yard punt return touchdown, setting the all time record of 11 punt return touchdowns in his career.
Carolina fought back in this game, but Chicago was able to hold them off and eventually win. Jay Cutler did not look very good in this game going 9 for 17 and an interception. For the Bears to beat the Lions next week Cutler and the defense are going to have to be on their game.
