Marc Trestman speaking with the media in Indianapolis as the NFL combine is set to get underway indicated that 2012 1st round pick Shea McClellin will move from defensive end to linebacker for the 2014 season. A surprise is the status of Jonathan Bostic who will be moved around as well.
“We know one thing in our second level: that Lance Briggs is gonna be our (weak-side) linebacker going in,” Trestman said. “Who’s going to be our (middle) and our (strong-side), we’re gonna move those guys around and we’ll see where we go in that regard.”
McClellin and Bostic will both work at the SAM and MIKE linebacker positions in preparation for the 2014 season. McClellin struggled mightily at the DE position during the first two seasons with the Bears and Bostic was put in as MIKE starter after a season ending injury to D.J. Williams.
Trestman indicated he would like to see Williams return and possibly the team going after a MIKE linebacker in free agency.
This still leaves questions with both safety positions and the status of Julius Peppers. Both of these issues I feel are of greater concern for this team as we get closer to the draft for a defense that couldn’t seem to stop teams when it really mattered down the stretch of the 2013 season.
